VOLUNTEER COACH JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                       ASSISTANT COACH

REPORTS TO:          Coaching Programs Manager

COMPENSATION:    Volunteer

Portland Community Football Club is a non-profit club that offers high quality, affordable soccer to low-income, immigrant and refugee youth ages 6-18 in Portland. We strive to reduce the barriers that prevent low-income, underserved youth from accessing quality play, equipment and coaching. We are also the first youth soccer club in Portland to have an open acceptance policy of LGBTQ players, families and staff and an open Queer, Transgender Founding Executive Director.

 

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The assistant coach will provide support in creating and implementing two 60-90 minute fun, organized trainings per week for a team of 12-15 players.  The assistant coach is responsible for helping the head coach to prepare their team for one game per week. If you know the basics about soccer, love to work with kids and love soccer we can train you to coach! Average hours per week: 6-8 hours.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Create a positive and encouraging environment for all players

  •   Be a part of designing fun, skill appropriate training sessions which players can relate to the game (see additional information section below on training offered)

  •   Assist in providing structure and organization to each training

  •   Assist the Head Coach to oversee and manage multiple players at one time

  •   Positive, consistent and clear communication with players

  •   Provide guidance and instruction with the Head Coach from the sidelines for at least 75% of games

  •   Provide general guidance on nutrition and healthy choices for all players

  • Manage and problem solve individual needs and team conflict with professionalism

  • Attend at least 75% of monthly coaches meetings

 

DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  •     Preferred experience in playing at least through high school level

  •     A commitment to attend at least 75% of practices and games (we know there are other life requirements to attend to sometimes).

  •     A commitment to coach for two consecutive seasons.

  •     Clear, direct and effective communication skills.

  •     The ability to adapt to individual player needs and team needs.

  •     A good sense of humor and the ability to learn from your mistakes.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Each coach will be required to complete the Foundations of Coaching course through United Soccer Coaches within the first three months of starting. This is a $10 online course. PCFC provides a free 4-month membership to United Soccer Coaches so that coaches can access additional educational and training materials. There will be additional in-person coaching education throughout the year. Volunteer coaches who strive to earn further licensure and commit to ONE YEAR of coaching can be offered the opportunity of a Head Coach position and receive a monthly stipend.
